In modern times the Chapel is no longer used as a religious space. Convocation, admitted students day and various student performances occur here. The basement has storage spaces used by the Vassar College Choir and Drama Department.
'''Emma Hartman Noyes House''' (commonly shortened to '''Noyes House''') is the most recently built dorm of the nine residential houses on campus. It is situated between [[Cushing House]] and the [[The Deece|Deece]]. The building is curved and faces the [[Noyes Circle|Noyes Circle (Nircle)]].

== Construction ==
Noyes House was designed by Eero Saarinen. It was originally designed to be a full semi-circle, but only a quarter-circle was built. Construction was completed in 1958.

== Rooms ==
Vassar's YouTube has a dorm tour video of Noyes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgJ_r4SJrw0

=== Doubles ===
There are ..... standard double in Noyes. They range from having dimensions of ... to ... and each have two triangular bay window seats. Above the seats are orb lights, and there are radiators under the seats. There are 9? particular doubles that have different dimensions, as they are not Nircle-facing. They are located at the far ends and the middle of each floor, except for the first.

=== Singles ===
Noyes Singles range from having dimensions of ... to .... The only singles with bay windows are the ones on the first floor, facing the Nircle. The rest of the singles are on the other side of the dorm and have flat windows with a flat circular light above, and radiators at the bottom. These windows face Cushing, the graveyard and the Deece.

=== Room furniture ===
Each single comes with a bed, desk, spinny chair, tall dresser, and built-in shelf on the wall. Each double comes with two of these items. Each single has two outlets, and each double has three(?). I will add the dimensions later!

=== Common rooms ===
On the first floor, Noyes has a lobby and two large common rooms. Every floor has two kitchenettes and bathrooms per floor. The basement has multiple rooms.

==== Noyes Lobby ====
The Noyes Lobby (or Nobby) is the main entrance room. It has two doors facing the Nircle with a vestibule, and one door facing the road. The elevator (Nelevator) is opposite to the vestibule. The Nobby typically has a rectangular table and a chair in it. From the Nobby, you can go to either exit, up or down the stairs or elevator, to the hallway with rooms that leads to the MPR, to the study room that is attached, or to the Jetsons Lounge.

==== Jetsons Lounge ====
[[File:Noyes House Jetson Lounge, March 2014.jpg|thumb|The Jetsons Lounge in March 2014]]
Central to the first floor of Noyes is the lounge, affectionately labeled "the Jetsons Lounge" (referencing the show ''The Jetsons'') due to its retro-futurist design.<ref>https://offices.vassar.edu/accessibility-and-educational-opportunity/accessibility/noyes-house/</ref> The lounge includes a sunken conversation pit, referred to by Noyesians as the "Passion Pit". Around the Passion Pit are various circular tables and chairs (some of this furniture might be replaced soon), as well as a printer and a Steinway piano.

Entering Jetsons from the Nobby, one would encounter:

* Jetsons kitchen (the largest kitchen in the dorm)
* Storage room and single-stall bathroom (known by some as the "poop deck") and
* The old computer room (which is currently empty, and might be turned into a workout room)
* The main room with the Passion Pit
* Two study rooms without doors that each contain a whiteboard, and some tables and chairs.

Past the study rooms is the Southwest staircase, past which are the apartments of the House Advisor and the House Fellow(s).

==== Multi Purpose Room ====
The Multi Purpose Room (MPR) was an addition to the Northeast side of the building, past the first floor singles. It has a high counter built into the Nircle- facing- window wall with stools to work at. There are also various stools and tall tables. At the back there is a ping-pong table, two vending machines, and a small couch. To the right of the entrance there is a TV that students to connect to with an HDMI cable. In front of the TV is a round couch that has a counter on the back. Behind this couch is the MPR kitchen, which has a piano, a fridge and cabinets (and probably a stove?). From the kitchen there are stairs to the basement. The MPR tends to get very hot at the start of the year.

==== Basement ====
The Noyes basement is an ominous place. It can be accessed from either of the two main staircases, the Nellevator, and the MPR kitchen stairs. Entering from the MPR stairs and walking through, one would encounter:

* House Team closet
* Door that says "Women 3"
* Empty room
* An employee break room
* Ceramics studio
* Men's Guest Bathroom (which no one uses and is basically gender-neutral)
* The stairs and Nelevator
* Two fenced-off storage areas
* Wide room where bikes are stored, with a low ceiling due to the passion pit (If you are taller than 5'3 watch our for pipes by your head), with a table with a plaster cast of half of a body
* Two laundry rooms
* Open room with chairs, tables, and a rug
* The "Blow Dicks" door (likely used to say "Below Ducts" but has been continuously drawn over)

==== Other floors ====
On each of the second, third and fourth floor, there are two kitchenettes and two gender-neutral bathrooms. Each of these floors are divided in half by a fire door. The bathrooms each have a wall of cubbies, a large mirror with four sinks, four toilet stalls, and three shower stalls. The kitchenettes vary slightly in size, but all contain a sink, microwave, cabinet, stove-top and rubbish bins. There are also some nooks that were used as phone booths on each floor.

== House Team ==
Noyes [[House Team]] typically consists of 6 Stufels, 3 Cofels, 3 HFIs, an HSA, HP and VP. Eva Fontanez is the current House Advisor.

=== Projects ===
Next year, Noyes House Team hopes to paint a mural on the main stairwell of various aquatic habitats and levels of depth. To get involved, contact Fia Marrison!

=== Noise on Noyes ===
Each spring, Noyes House Team hosts '''Noise on Noyes''', an all-campus event. It is held in the spring semester, in mid to late April. It features student bands, has free food, student clothing sales, and other activities. Though it is always a fun event when in Jetsons or the Aula, for at least the past five years House Team has hoped to host it on the Nircle, but it has rained (and in 2025 snowed) every time. Hopefully next year the curse will be broken.

==== Past house chants ====
* "Make, some, Noyes!!! (to the tune of Pitbull's Hotel Room) Ba ba ba ba BA ba ba meet me at the passion pit Ba ba ba ba BA ba ba meet me at the passion pit!"(Pose as a Narwhal)
* "No! Yes! No! Yes! No! Yes! No! Yes! Make, some, Nooooyes"(Scream)
* "Who are we?" "Noyes House!" "What are we?" "Gnarly!" "You mess with the Narwhal you get the horn!"
* "Who are we?" "Narwhals!" "What are we?" "Gnarly!" "Make, some, Noooyes!" "(to the tune of Katseye's Gnarly) Na-na-na-nana gnarly, na-na-na-nana narwhals, na-na-na-nana gnarly, everything's Noyes House!"
'''Students for Equitable Environmental Decisions''' (abbreviated as '''SEED''') is a student org dedicated to environmental issues and activism. Its primary focus is fighting for decarbonization of the campus heating system. Vassar's current steam heating burns fossil fuels on campus, and in the near future the college will be moving to a [[wikipedia:Ground_source_heat_pump|geothermal heat pump]] system.<ref name=":0">Engineering firm Wendel to prepare Vassar decarbonization plan – The Miscellany News</ref> SEED holds seats on the [https://www.vassar.edu/sustainability/leadership Climate Action and Sustainability Committee] (CASC) and [https://www.vassar.edu/arboretum Arboretum Committee].

== History ==
SEED was originally founded as '''DivestVC''', pushing Vassar to withdraw their investments in fossil fuel companies. In May 2016, a week-long sit in was staged outside the office of President Catherine Bond Hill.<ref>DivestVC responds to recent trustee vote – The Miscellany News</ref> They also pushed for the Carbon Neutrality by 2030 in Vassar's 2020 Climate Action Plan.<ref><nowiki>https://vassarseed.wixsite.com/website/climate-action</nowiki></ref> In 2022, SEED achieved their goal of divesting Vassar from fossil fuels. With their main goal accomplished, SEED merged with the [[Greens]], another environmental org, in Fall 2022.

In late 2024, SEED was reestablished as '''DecarbonizeVC''', before returning to the previous name. The org now advocated for Vassar to swiftly transition to a ground source heat pump heating system.<ref>Making the case for ground-source heat pumps at Vassar – The Miscellany News</ref> In 2025, Vassar hired the engineering firm [https://wendelcompanies.com/ Wendel] to produce a plan of how to decarbonize the college.<ref name=":0" /> In 2026, the College's Master Planning Committee allocated $25 million of the next fundraising campaign to decarbonization projects. SEED has called on the College to break ground on the project by 2030.<ref><nowiki>https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YDbCy_IUA-lrzfMv2Np7UiWhoQ4r1at7CPv0N71kVZ4/edit?tab=t.0</nowiki></ref>
== History ==
On February 5, 2026, a group of students peacefully disrupted a lecture by Steven Cash, hosted by Engaged Pluralism. The protestors sought to denounce Cash's work in drafting the Patriot Act and establishing the Department of Homeland Security, as well as his invitation to speak at Vassar.<ref name=":0">https://www.instagram.com/p/DWjiRLEDjzn/?img_index=3</ref> The disruption caused the event to end early. In a statement shortly after the event, President Bradley characterized the protest as "against our community expectations as well as the college’s commitment to Academic Responsibility and Respect for Persons".<ref>February 6, 2026 email "A message from the president: Speaker event" from presidentsoffice@vassar.edu</ref> The Community Expectations office and VSA leveled sanctions against SJP and placed the org on probation. In a March 31 statement, SJP characterized the disciplinary response as "egregiously biased and distorted", accusing the College of racial profiling and political repression.<ref name=":0" />
[[File:3D Scan of the Snort.png|thumb|A 3D scan taken of the Snort Feb 6, 2026]]The '''Snow Fort''' ('''Snort''') was a large quinzhee (snow cave) built by [[User:FaffingFia|Fia Marrison]] and their friends on the [[Noyes Circle]] in the winter of 2025-2026. It contained four chambers and an outdoor courtyard, with various connecting tunnels.

== Building ==
The Snort went under many phases and changes.

=== Tools ===
The Snort was built with.... After the majority of the second chamber was built, the builders used a metal shovel and the ice pick from the [[Outing Club]]. Later they also used a large plastic shovel from them as well.

=== Time ===
According to Fia's spreadsheet schedule, they spent ..... hours on the snort.

== Documentation ==

=== Media ===
The Snort was featured on Vassar's socials in a video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7NQtd_cEzvw

[[The Miscellany News]] made a video and published an article on the Snort: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jDTelj1cio https://miscellanynews.org/2026/02/05/features/building-a-snow-fort-with-a-pan-a-cup-and-a-dream/

=== Notebook ===
Fia kept a notebook for the duration of the Snort.

== Community Engagement ==
Many people collaborated on building the Snort. Fia, Cormac, Quin, Etta, Sophia, and Reave were the main consistent builders. Other collaborators included: Xander, Melody, Asher, Valentin, Parker (as secretary), Rache, Este, Ziva.

Fia also collaborated with two members of the grounds team, Bernardo and Jaime, to plow snow to give the Snort some more life, and to make a small snow structure by the preschool [[Winpfheimer|Wimpfheimer]].

Starting March ? there was a guestbook in the Snort that people could write notes in.

== Artwork ==
Fia has made many theoretical and representative floor plans of the Snort, and has drawn sketches of the Snort in ballpoint pen. For their Color (Art 108) midterm they made three small chalk pastel drawings on black paper. As their Drawing 1 (Art 103) final they made four large chalk pastel drawings.

== History ==
....

== Current state ==
Fia collapsed the Snort over spring break, and the very final remnants melted on March 25th. Fia is currently doing an independent study on Snow Architecture, and they will continue to update this page and maybe post the link to a digital zine here if they make one.
The initiative began as a result of a surplus in the VSA's executive discretionary fund for the 2022–2023 year. The rollout brought criticism over glitches in the app required to unlock a bike from the racks.<ref>https://miscellanynews.org/2024/12/04/news/comedians-expose-the-vsa-at-town-hall-roast/</ref><ref>https://miscellanynews.org/2023/11/15/opinions/kinks-in-vcycle-need-to-be-worked-out/</ref>
A student of [[wikipedia:Louis_Agassiz|Louis Agassiz]], the famed Darwin critic, Tenney was a creationist and rejected the theory of evolution. Tenney was replaced by James Orton in 1869. Orton was a friend of Henry Ward and Charles Darwin, and served as manager of the collection until he died in 1877 in Peru on a collecting trip.<ref name=":0" />

=== Vassar College Museum of Natural History ===
In 1874, the College's Riding Academy was decommissioned. This led to the collections being moved to the Calisthenium and Riding Academy (later Avery Hall) and the rebranding to the Vassar College Museum of Natural History.<ref name=":0" /> The Riding Academy would be renamed to the Museum. At this time, the collections expanded beyond geology to include zoological and anatomical specimens.

Upon Orton's death, William Buck Dwight became the college's new Professor of Natural History. Dwight's major project was to acquire a mastodon skeleton for the Museum. Dwight assembled one using the bones of many individuals from across the nation, and the [[Vassar Mastodon]] became one of the centerpieces of the collection.<ref name=":0" /> It measured 9 feet tall and 20 feet long, larger than most mastodons.<ref name=":2">Mastodon - Vassar Encyclopedia - Vassar College</ref>

=== Move to New England ===
In 1918, the Museum moved again, this time to New England Building. The second floor was taken up by the collection of 3,000 taxidermy birds, including over half of all those in North America. The landing between the first and second floors had embryological models from a wide variety of animals. The majority of exhibits were on the third floor, including specimens in cases and the skeletons and taxidermies. Skeletons included a Mastodon, horse, cow, pig and deer, and taxidermies included a sea turtle, walrus, a famous game fish, the tarpon (which was an impressive 6 feet, 6 inches long and weighed about 187 pounds), and the American Bison. There were also models of extinct elephant relatives and a saber-toothed tiger, as well as displays of insects and parisites.<ref name=":0" /> At this time, all Poughkeepsie children came on field trips to the museum.

Over time, the museum fell into disrepair. In the 1970s the Walrus, Buffalo and other specimens needed to be disposed of due to infestations. An employee stole these from the dumpster, but the walrus tusks were returned in 2006.<ref name=":0" />

In 1973, with the creation of Olmsted Hall, the Plant Sciences, Zoology and Anatomy departments were consolidated into one singular Biology Department. With their move to Olmsted, New England third floor was turned over to studio art. In 1979 the decision was made to close the museum, and Professor Margaret Wright was tasked with finding new homes for the collections. Pieces of the museum were send to Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Natural History in New York City, the State Museum at Albany, the Trailside Museum in Westchester County, Dutchess Community College and the Audubon Society. Some of the birds were moved to Olmsted Hall, where they remain to this day.

In 1986, the Mastodon skeleton was believed to be a plaster cast and was scheduled to be disposed of. An art professor contacted the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan and confirmed that it was in fact real. The skeleton was transferred to SUNY New Paltz, where it sat unassembled in storage until at least 2005.<ref name=":2" />
'''Students for Equitable Environmental Decisions''' or '''SEED''' is a student org dedicated to environmental issues and activism.

== History ==
SEED was originally founded as '''DivestVC''', pushing Vassar to withdraw their investments in fossil fuel companies. In May 2016, a weeklong sit in was staged outside the office of President Catherine Bond Hill.<ref>DivestVC responds to recent trustee vote – The Miscellany News</ref> They also pushed for the Carbon Neutrality by 2030 in Vassar's 2020 Climate Action Plan.<ref><nowiki>https://vassarseed.wixsite.com/website/climate-action</nowiki></ref> In 2022, SEED achieved their goal of divesting Vassar from fossil fuels. With their main goal accomplished, SEED merged with [[Vassar Greens|Greens]], another Environmental org, in Fall 2022.

In late 2024, SEED was reestablished as '''DecarbonizeVC''' before returning to the previous name.
