Most people have only been exposed to wikis through reading Wikipedia, or perhaps a fan wiki like the Minecraft wiki. As a result, many people erroneously believe that "wiki" is just another term for an online encyclopedia. The term "wiki" describes any website collaboratively edited and managed by its audience through a web browser. As a result, wikis are able to serve a variety of purposes beyond encyclopedias, including collective note-taking, code documentation, and project management.

VassarWiki aims to primarily serve as a way to share knowledge among the Vassar community. As such, it can be viewed as an encyclopedia in a loose sense, since it's a compendium of knowledge about Vassar. However, the term "encyclopedia" fails to encompass the community-building that is integral to the project—hence "an encyclopedia and more".

VassarWiki is also not Wikipedia for Vassar. There already is a Wikipedia for Vassar: Wikipedia. VassarWiki has a similar but distinct mission to Wikipedia, hopefully made clear through the table below:

Position<section begin="feature" />
I want to begin this open letter by thanking all of you who have contributed to VassarWiki so far! I know it's not a small request to ask you to dedicate your time amidst the busiest time of the year. At the end of the day, the project doesn't exist without you.

Since I spearheaded this project and I'm graduating, I feel a responsibility to make my thoughts about its future transparent, hence writing this open letter. I believe this next time period is really critical for the success of this project. So I would really appreciate your help!

I think our ultimate goal at this point should be to achieve greater participation, which means getting both more contributors and more readers. Using the language of the technology adoption lifecycle, we are very much in the first stage of "innovators". Our challenge is to cross the "chasm" to get early adopters. <section end="feature" />This can only come by:

1. Making VassarWiki truly valuable
Don't get me wrong, I think the project is in a really promising state right now! But VassarWiki is still in its infancy, so it still has a lot of gaps. While there will never come a point where VassarWiki is "complete", there is a critical (albeit fuzzy) threshold where the wiki can be relied upon for information.

Reaching this point means doing a few things:

* creating pages for more significant subjects
* expanding existing pages to be comprehensive
* refining pages to be presentable
* making the site navigable

Since it's summer and the campus is much less active, we are able to do this work at a leisurely pace.

2. Properly articulating VassarWiki's utility
Of course, this requires VassarWiki to have utility, hence the first section. But we need to make people aware of that utility for them to want to use it.

I think there are some low hanging fruit that we can take. If you put resources and projects here, share them! Notify groups you're connected to so they can ensure the information on their page is correct. Once people are back on campus, distribute posters and QR codes around campus. With a campus of roughly 3000 people, we can spread the word fast.

After much trial and error talking to people about this project, I've developed a rough elevator pitch. Feel free to take it and adapt it if you wish: <blockquote>The goal of VassarWiki is to harness the wisdom of the crowd for collecting and organizing community information. A website where any community member can easily contribute information (a wiki) will make our information infrastructure more democratic, efficient, and persistent beyond the four-year student turnover cycle. We all have unique knowledge to share, and it shouldn't stay trapped in our heads or disappear after we graduate/retire. There are many reasons to help, like to advertise what you're doing on campus, memorialize your time here, or raise social/historical consciousness. </blockquote>Since I'm now a graduate, I can't promote the wiki on campus. But I am able to promote it online and in a better position to facilitate alumni contributions. Because I envision the wiki to be a way for institutional knowledge to be shared across generations, bringing in alumni is a massive part of the project's success. At the same time, while I think the wiki should be open to the community at large, it should still center the people most enmeshed in the community (namely, students). So I'm going to set alumni contributions as something to work towards once we get significant on-campus buy-in.

3. Lowering barriers to entry
I've tried my best to make the editing process as easy as possible through refining a number of project pages. If you work though any kind of difficulty in contributing, consider making or editing a project page so it's easier for others! And if you have any suggestions on how the editing process can be improved, please reach out.

If you're asking someone to contribute, give them a specific ask and do some of the work first. For example, I'm making a page on the 2024 SJP encampment so that SJP members/alums (and others) can provide testimonials and any archives they have. To make it easy, I'll first make a shell of the page and provide some information of my own.

Some final notes
Even though I'm an alum now, I'm still dedicated to this project. And despite being in this weird middle-ground spot, I'm actually really hopeful about it. I hope you are too.

Also, I'd like to ensure that VassarWiki has true shared governance. If you've been involved thus far, consider being an administrator. And if you or your group is interested in sharing the ownership of the servers, let me know. I really don't want to be a dictator guys.

If you have any concerns or suggestions, provide them. Anyway, enjoy your summers!

As such, it can be viewed an encyclopedia in a loose sense, a compendium of knowledge about Vassar. However, the term "encyclopedia" fails to encompass the community-building that is integral to the project.

VassarWiki is also not "Wikipedia for Vassar". There already is a Wikipedia for Vassar: Wikipedia. VassarWiki has a similar but distinct mission to Wikipedia, which can hopefully be made clear through the table below:

{| class="wikitable"
|-
|Purpose
|To facilitate the sharing and organization of knowledge for/about the Vassar community, archiving it along the way. It serves as a host for primary, secondary, and tertiary sources.
|To organize and archive the world's knowledge in an encyclopedia, a tertiary source.
|-
|Scope
|There is no "notability" requirement for inclusion. Inclusion is contingent on being somehow related to Vassar College, whether that's campus life, history, scholarship, or something else.
|Inclusion is contingent on notability, generally determined through inclusion in reliable sources. All subjects can be written on, within limits.
|-
|POV
|All articles are written from a neutral point of view.
|-
|Tone
|As of June 9, 2026, there are no guidelines on tone for articles. User page content can be written in any tone.
|Articles are written in a formal, impersonal, and dispassionate tone.
|-
|Audience
|Articles are written primarily to the Vassar community, especially when an encyclopedia article on that subject already exists.
|Articles are written to a global audience.
|-
|Sources
|Content should generally be accompanied by sources of many types. Reliability is considered in an expansive sense that includes oral history; the comparative reliability of sources is considered when resolving content disputes. "Original research" is allowed, but must be designated as such through sourcing.
|All content must be supported by sources deemed reliable by the community. Original research is not allowed on articles.

According to legend, Jewett resident Edna St. Vincent Millay threatened to throw herself from the roof. Evidently, she didn't follow through with that.
Our existing communication tools weren't built for college life. Emails are overwhelming and easy to miss, official sites only push information from the top down, and social media is manipulated by corporate algorithms. These tools fail because they don't reflect the fluidity and collaboration of communities. This is why we are building Vassar a wiki: a website that is collaboratively edited and governed by its users.

VassarWiki is a common space for the Vassar community to share and organize knowledge about Vassar life. Any community member can contribute, so keeping up to date is a shared effort instead of an individual burden. And as a persistent resource, VassarWiki is building an institutional memory that survives the four-year student turnover cycle.

If you want to help us, you should contribute! All you need is five minutes and something worth sharing.

Getting started
VassarWiki:Help
Anyone connected to Vassar can contribute! All you have to do is sign up with your Vassar email. If you're connected to Vassar but lack a vassar.edu email, you have to apply to have your account approved.

You can edit a page by clicking the "Edit" button by a section or at the top of the page. You can either use the visual editor (recommended if you're new to editing, but more resource-intensive and slightly less capable) or switch to the source editor on the upper-right. Make whatever changes to the page you want, write a short edit summary, and save your changes. If your changes are non-controversial and superficial (e.g. fixing typos or minor formatting), click the minor edit button before saving your changes.

You can create a page by going to Special:EditPage and entering your desired title, or clicking a red link with the desired title (on desktop, you can find one by searching it).

What can I contribute?
VassarWiki:What should I contribute?VassarWiki is deliberately open-ended to adapt to community needs. There are two main types of pages:

* Articles can be about things like student orgs, events, classes, departments, and college lore. Content should be written from a neutral third-person point of view and be sourced when possible.
* Every contributor has user pages that only they can edit. You can put pretty much anything on your user pages (e.g. interests, projects, org memberships, essays or freeform content, contact information).

There are a few other types of pages as well:

* Every page has a corresponding talk page, where you can resolve disputes about page content or otherwise talk freely about that page's subject.
* Categories are assigned to pages to assist in navigation and organization. They are listed at the bottom of a page.
* Templates are pages designed for inclusion in other pages.
* Files like images, videos, and audio files, can be embedded in pages. Files should almost be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, where they will be released to the public domain.
* Project pages (those with the prefix "VassarWiki") deal with the governance and maintenance of VassarWiki.
Please read and understand VassarWiki policies before you edit. It's encouraged that you read any relevant guidelines before you edit, but there is no need to be an expert.

Contributions generally don't require prior approval, so if you think you can improve this project, be bold and make the edit! If there's an issue with your contribution, another user can revert it and you can discuss on a talk page if needed.

Policies and guidelines
Policies are the site's foundational principles that all contributors must follow. Put simply, contributors should:

* Build and respect consensus when disputes arise
* Leave a trail of citations, edit summaries, and talk page signatures
* Not publish copyrighted work here
* Not censor information they don't like
* Be civil and assume other contributors come in good faith

Guidelines are records of best practices in content and behavior. While there is no need to be an expert on guidelines when starting out, contributors should generally defer to and attempt to follow them.

Like everything on VassarWiki, policies and guidelines are established by community consensus and can evolve.

Governance
VassarWiki adopts a collective governance model, where decisions are made through deliberation and consensus-building. The weight of each contributor's voice should be evaluated by the strength of their argument.

Certain technical actions require their access be limited to a smaller group of contributors called administrators, who remain bound to community consensus and are not given any precedence in disputes.

Our existing communication tools weren't built for college life. Emails are overwhelming and easy to miss, official sites only push information from the top down, and social media hands control to corporate algorithms. These tools fail because they don't reflect the fluidity and collaboration of life at Vassar. This is why we are building a wiki: a website that is collaboratively edited and governed by its users.

VassarWiki is a common space for the Vassar community to share and organize knowledge. Any community member can contribute, so keeping up to date is a shared effort instead of an individual burden. And as a persistent resource, VassarWiki is building an institutional memory that survives the four-year student turnover cycle.

If you want to help us, you should contribute! All you need is five minutes and something worth sharing.

Welcome to VassarWiki, a wiki built by and for the Vassar College community!
As a persistent resource, VassarWiki is simultaneously building an institutional memory that survives the four-year student turnover cycle.
It is a chapter of National Students for Justice in Palestine.
History
Encampment
2024 SJP encampment
On April 30, 2024, SJP established the Vassar Popular University for Gaza, an encampment on Library Lawn. The encampment lasted until May 4, 2024.

Post–encampment
On February 5, 2026, a group of students peacefully disrupted a lecture by Steven Cash, hosted by Engaged Pluralism. The protestors sought to denounce Cash's work in drafting the Patriot Act and establishing the Department of Homeland Security, as well as his invitation to speak at Vassar. The disruption caused the event to end early. In a statement shortly after the event, President Bradley characterized the protest as "against our community expectations as well as the college’s commitment to Academic Responsibility and Respect for Persons". The Community Expectations office and VSA leveled sanctions against SJP and placed the org on probation. In a March 31 statement, SJP characterized the disciplinary response as "egregiously biased and distorted", accusing the College of racial profiling and political repression.
Additional label/data pairs follow the same pattern: <code>label2</code>/<code>data2</code>, <code>label3</code>/<code>data3</code>, and so on. There is no hard limit.

Example
Call this template from another template, passing labeled rows as parameters:

<pre>
{{Infobox
| title = {}
| image = {}
| caption = {}
| label1 = Founded
| data1 = {}
| label2 = Type
| data2 = {}
}}
Emma Hartman Noyes House (commonly shortened to Noyes House) is the most recently built dorm of the nine residential houses on campus. It is situated between Cushing House and the Deece. The building is curved and faces the Noyes Circle (Nircle).

Construction
Noyes House was designed by Eero Saarinen. It was originally designed to be a full semi-circle, but only a quarter-circle was built. Construction was completed in 1958.
Vassar's YouTube has a dorm tour video of Noyes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgJ_r4SJrw0

Doubles
There are ..... standard double in Noyes. They range from having dimensions of ... to ... and each have two triangular bay window seats. Above the seats are orb lights, and there are radiators under the seats. There are 9? particular doubles that have different dimensions, as they are not Nircle-facing. They are located at the far ends and the middle of each floor, except for the first.

Singles
Noyes Singles range from having dimensions of ... to .... The only singles with bay windows are the ones on the first floor, facing the Nircle. The rest of the singles are on the other side of the dorm and have flat windows with a flat circular light above, and radiators at the bottom. These windows face Cushing, the graveyard and the Deece.

Room furniture
Each single comes with a bed, desk, spinny chair, tall dresser, and built-in shelf on the wall. Each double comes with two of these items. Each single has two outlets, and each double has three(?). I will add the dimensions later!

Common rooms
On the first floor, Noyes has a lobby and two large common rooms. Every floor has two kitchenettes and bathrooms per floor. The basement has multiple rooms.

Noyes Lobby
The Noyes Lobby (or Nobby) is the main entrance room. It has two doors facing the Nircle with a vestibule, and one door facing the road. The elevator (Nelevator) is opposite to the vestibule. The Nobby typically has a rectangular table and a chair in it. From the Nobby, you can go to either exit, up or down the stairs or elevator, to the hallway with rooms that leads to the MPR, to the study room that is attached, or to the Jetsons Lounge.

Central to the first floor of Noyes is the lounge, affectionately labeled "the Jetsons Lounge" (referencing the show The Jetsons) due to its retro-futurist design. The lounge includes a sunken conversation pit, referred to by Noyesians as the "Passion Pit". Around the Passion Pit are various circular tables and chairs (some of this furniture might be replaced soon), as well as a printer and a Steinway piano.

Entering Jetsons from the Nobby, one would encounter:

* Jetsons kitchen (the largest kitchen in the dorm)
* Storage room and single-stall bathroom (known by some as the "poop deck") and
* The old computer room (which is currently empty, and might be turned into a workout room)
* The main room with the Passion Pit
* Two study rooms without doors that each contain a whiteboard, and some tables and chairs.

Past the study rooms is the Southwest staircase, past which are the apartments of the House Advisor and the House Fellow(s).

Multi Purpose Room
The Multi Purpose Room (MPR) was an addition to the Northeast side of the building, past the first floor singles. It has a high counter built into the Nircle- facing- window wall with stools to work at. There are also various stools and tall tables. At the back there is a ping-pong table, two vending machines, and a small couch. To the right of the entrance there is a TV that students to connect to with an HDMI cable. In front of the TV is a round couch that has a counter on the back. Behind this couch is the MPR kitchen, which has a piano, a fridge and cabinets (and probably a stove?). From the kitchen there are stairs to the basement. The MPR tends to get very hot at the start of the year.

Basement
The Noyes basement is an ominous place. It can be accessed from either of the two main staircases, the Nellevator, and the MPR kitchen stairs. Entering from the MPR stairs and walking through, one would encounter:

* House Team closet
* Door that says "Women 3"
* Empty room
* An employee break room
* Ceramics studio
* Men's Guest Bathroom (which no one uses and is basically gender-neutral)
* The stairs and Nelevator
* Two fenced-off storage areas
* Wide room where bikes are stored, with a low ceiling due to the passion pit (If you are taller than 5'3 watch our for pipes by your head), with a table with a plaster cast of half of a body
* Two laundry rooms
* Open room with chairs, tables, and a rug
* The "Blow Dicks" door (likely used to say "Below Ducts" but has been continuously drawn over)

Other floors
On each of the second, third and fourth floor, there are two kitchenettes and two gender-neutral bathrooms. Each of these floors are divided in half by a fire door. The bathrooms each have a wall of cubbies, a large mirror with four sinks, four toilet stalls, and three shower stalls. The kitchenettes vary slightly in size, but all contain a sink, microwave, cabinet, stove-top and rubbish bins. There are also some nooks that were used as phone booths on each floor.

House Team
Noyes House Team typically consists of 6 Stufels, 3 Cofels, 3 HFIs, an HSA, HP and VP. Eva Fontanez is the current House Advisor.

Projects
Next year, Noyes House Team hopes to paint a mural on the main stairwell of various aquatic habitats and levels of depth. To get involved, contact Fia Marrison!

Noise on Noyes
Each spring in mid to late April, Noyes House Team hosts Noise on Noyes, an all-campus event. It features student bands, has free food, student clothing sales, and other activities. Though it is always a fun event when in Jetsons or the Aula, for at least the past five years House Team has hoped to host it on the Nircle, but it has rained (and in 2025 snowed) every time. Hopefully next year the curse will be broken.

Past house chants
* "Make, some, Noyes!!! (to the tune of Pitbull's Hotel Room) Ba ba ba ba BA ba ba meet me at the passion pit Ba ba ba ba BA ba ba meet me at the passion pit!" (Pose as a Narwhal)
* "No! Yes! No! Yes! No! Yes! No! Yes! Make, some, Nooooyes" (Scream)
* "Who are we?" "Noyes House!" "What are we?" "Gnarly!" "You mess with the Narwhal you get the horn!"
* "Who are we?" "Narwhals!" "What are we?" "Gnarly!" "Make, some, Noooyes!" "(to the tune of Katseye's Gnarly) Na-na-na-nana gnarly, na-na-na-nana narwhals, na-na-na-nana gnarly, everything's Noyes House!"
