The Chapel was built in 1904 to house religious services. Prior to this, there had been a Chapel on the third and fourth floors of Main Building. Following the construction of the current Chapel, that space was converted into Assembly Hall.

In modern times the Chapel is no longer used as a religious space. Convocation, admitted students day and various student performances occur here. The basement has storage spaces used by the Vassar College Choir and Drama Department.
